DIY Paper Beetle Sculpture Kits by Assembli

January 6th, 2017

Assembli, a Netherlands-based studio which was founded by printing company Lankhorst and designer Joop Bource, is a place where they develop fun and contemporary interior design projects with a creative twist.

They have just released a colorful collection of DIY beetle models made from paper and cardboard, where all of the skeleton parts, wings and body parts interlock together. You can mount them as a very cool piece of decor, or they can be played with by the kids, which is more fun but will shorten their life span considerably! Or you could get two sets and use one for each of these functions.

The model kits are available in three different beetle species including stag, hercules, and atlas, each in various metallic colors. The kits are currently available on Easy and don’t break the bank. You will want to get all of them once you get started.

6 New Years Fun Kids Activities

December 29th, 2016

1. Paper Fortune Cookies @ Homework

I compiled these New Year’s Eve activities for kids because, well, New Year’s Eve is not really a kiddie kind of occasion and it should be. Apart from the “Kiddie Champagne” that we get the kids for special occasions, I’m always on the lookout for fun ways they can celebrate this passage into the New Year in a particularly kid way! And I feel that it’s always a great idea to get kids in the habit of starting the new year afresh and learning how to make resolutions or plan their year.

Maybe you will pick one of these and help mark the occasion with your kid or kids!

Stella McCartney Kids Cosmic Trip – Fall Winter 2016/17

December 28th, 2016

Stella McCartney Kids Cosmic Trip – Fall Winter 2016/17 has four themes in one: Circus, Cosmic Trip, Cowgirl and Wild Wild West. The Wild West is a theme close to Stella’s heart and this is basically a tie-in of what we’ve seen from this label for years and a mix of many of her trademarks. There’s a new variation on her famous Circus Ringleader jacket, clear, crisp colors, lovely knits, and a mix of drawn graphics and more photographic prints for the cosmic look. And a fair share of furry jackets! All in all, a very comfortable and wearable collection with a nice touch of the theatrical.
Take a look at the entire kid’s collection on the Stella McCartney website.

Melted Snowman Christmas Cookies

December 22nd, 2016

So, what do you think of our Melted Snowman Christmas Cookies!? We decided to go for something different and humorous this year. Only thing is that some people are saying these look macabre! I guess it does remind us a little of the Wizard of Oz and the “I’m melting. I’m melting”, scene of the Wicked Witch of the West.

These are simple sugar cookies, with a marshmallow and some art and well, I think they are quite dramatic for cookies.

If you want to try these out too, the recipe is below.

Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 3⁄4cups flour

Directions:

  1. Cream butter and sugar.
  2. Add egg and vanilla.
  3. Mix all dry ingredients and add slowly to butter cream mixture until incorporated.
  4. Roll out on lightly floured board to desired thickness.
  5. Cutout 2-1/2″ hearts and bake at 400 degrees for 7- 10 minutes.
  6. Should be light in color with light browning on the edges.

Icing

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, stir together confectioners’ sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.
  2. Divide into separate bowls, and add food colorings to each to desired intensity. Dip cookies, or paint them with a brush.

Real Shades Cool Sunglasses for Kids

December 20th, 2016

We just received our Real Shades cool sunglasses for kids. The girls just love the way they look and I love that they don’t fall off because they have the band that goes around the head and also because Real Shades are the real deal as far as sun protection for kids.. I got these for the snow and other sun activities we might do in winter.

In fact, the Melanoma International Foundation (MIF) has awarded Real Kids its Seal of Approval. This signifies that Real Kids has met MIF standards for 100% UV protective eyewear for children. And Real Kids Shades has partnered with Prevent Blindness to offer a “Star Pupils” branded pair of protective sunglasses. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the sale of these 100% ultraviolet (UV-A and UV-B) protective sunglasses will be donated to the children’s vision education initiative.

Here is what Real Kids has to say about protecting children’s eyes in the winter:

Red Velvet Cream Cheese Christmas Cookies

December 15th, 2016

We have started the search for the Christmas Cookie selection we will be baking this year and these Red Velvet Cream Cheese Christmas Cookies jumped out at me. We’ve never made anything quite like these for Christmas so will be giving it a bash! In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like these. We do like Red Velvet in this family, maybe more for the color than the flavor, so why not!

The recipe is below and comes from this fabulous cookbook called The Red Velvet Lover’s Cookbook by Deborah Harroun and is full of many creative Red Velvet recipes if that is your thing. You can nab it right here on Amazon!

INGREDIENTS:

FOR THE COOKIES:

1 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 egg yolk*

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

4 tsp red food coloring

2 tsp cocoa powder

1/2 cup granulated sugar or sanding sugar*

FOR THE FILLING:

4 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 egg yolk*

1/4 cup sugar

1/8 tsp salt

1/4 tsp vanilla
DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 300ºF. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Beat together the butter, brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Mix in the flour, food coloring, and cocoa powder until soft dough forms.

Scoop out the dough by heaping tablespoons and roll them in the sugar* before placing on the prepared baking sheet (about 2 inches apart). Use the back of a round teaspoon to make a small indentation in the cookie dough.

Bake for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the filling: using an electric mixer or small food processor, beat together the cream cheese, egg yolk, sugar, salt, and vanilla until smooth.

After the first 10 minutes of baking, use the back of a round teaspoon to deepen the indentation in the cookies. Spoon a teaspoon of the filling into each indentation. Bake for an additional 12 minutes, until filling is set.

Let cool completely before serving. Store covered and chilled.

Dolce & Gabbana Mini Me Girls Tulip Collection Fall Winter 2016/2017

December 12th, 2016

The Dolce & Gabbana Mini Me Girls Tulip Collection Fall Winter 2016/2017 is straight off the runways of Milan Fashion Week and then made a lot cuter! The tulip is a symbol of love and purity and the designers have employed a palette of gorgeous variations in these prints in color, shape and style, all printed on a background of black. The use of the same fabrics for the women’s collection and children’s collection is masterful and I love the way the baby wears the fabric just as well as the model!

Very exciting mini me collection from Dolce & Gabbana indeed.

Arctic Christmas – A Very Cool Pop-up Book

December 7th, 2016

arctic_christmas_6

We just received our latest pop-up booked called Arctic Christmas – A Very Cool Pop-up Book and Solène is loving it. It’s a very simple pop-up book full of sweetness, and obviously a perfect gift for Christmas for younger kids and you still have time to have it arrive on time for the big day. We are big fans of the other pop-up books which were paper-engineered by the talented Yevgeniya Yeretskaya. In fact, the girls’ absolute fave book ever is The Snow Queen, (which I blogged about right here).

You can purchase Arctic Christmas right here !
